SMART Photonics is a rapidly growing, ambitious open foundry on InP Photonics. We have the world leading ability to monolithically integrate passive (waveguide, MMI, DWDM) and active (lasers, RF modulators, detectors) functionalities on a single substrate. Furthermore, we are unique in offering our customers a Process Design Kit (PDK) which allows them to design complex photonic circuits. Our customers come from a range of market sectors, including telecom/datacom, medical sensing, automotive/lidar and quantum technologies. SMART Photonics is looking to increase the sophistication in the integration of the PDK elements into complex functionalities and high performing Photonic Integrated Circuits. To this effect SMART Photonics is establishing a world class Photonics Development Team to demonstrate the full PDK capabilities through reference designs and by providing design support and IP Blocks to our customers.

We are looking for an experienced professionals on different levels to establish this Photonics Development Team, including PIC Designers, PIC Architects and PIC Device Physicists who have the background and vision to shape this team. For this team we are looking for a mix of experience levels and a complementary expertise specialties. (Simulation, Device Physics, Characterisation, Modelling, RF, etc). Background in InP PIC technology is of interest, but experience in other PIC technologies will be equally considered.

Job description

  • Design
    • Design high performance and complex photonics devices suitable for high volume manufacturing meeting the desired DfX (Design for Manufacturability, Testability, Packageability, Reliability) targets.
    • Develop & design the novel Photonic Devices monolithically integrating active and passive building blocks towards the field of Sensing, Optical Tele/Data comms, Automotive, Quantum Communication and Healthcare.
    • Become the gold standard for best design practices and contribute to high-quality reports, publications and patents.
    • Engage in problem solving and contributing with novel PIC Architectural and Design ideas to meet increased customer or system requirements.
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of SMARTS’s PDK (Process Design Kit) on both the design and compact model side.
    • Coordinate the layout of photonic ICs, LVS, DRC and tape-out.
    • Develop and optimize new photonic designs and concepts.
    • Work on integration of lasers and photodetectors, both design and technology development.
  • Validation
    • Work with the Photonics Test team in defining requirements for device characterization, debug and validation.
    • Analyze and characterize the test data to ensure the designed Photonic Circuits meet the specifications
    • Ensure all verification and qualification results are properly tracked, documented and analyzed and work intimately with the Quality department
    • Use the process and test data at your disposal to optimise the design for Performance, Yield and DfX
  • Cross-Functional
    • Actively collaborate across disciplines to ensure the photonic devices for tape outs meet the requirements for performance and DfX.
    • Work cross-functionally and as part of the various project teams to incorporate and evangelize the photonics expertise.
    • Interface with internal and external teams for fabrication, assembly, packaging and testing
    • Perform competitive analysis and benchmarking to ensure the designed PIC’s make our customers competitive in their respective markets.
    • Align with the team and cross sectorial departments to deliver the company vision and plan and determine the approach accordingly.
    • Represent the Photonics Development team in cross-functional meetings and incorporate the photonics expertise.
  • Customer Support
    • Support our sales and marketing team in dealings with customers -and- assist in solving a wide range of complex technical challenges related to Photonics Circuits Designs for diverse applications.
    • Translate customer requirements into Photonics Circuits, map these onto our PIC technology, strengthen the capabilities of the foundry, stay ahead in leading this new industry and ultimately accelerate time-to-market

We are looking for a person who has /is

  • Master/PhD degree in a relevant technical discipline (Optics, Photonics, Opto-Electronics preferred).
  • Experience as PIC Designer, PIC Architect or PIC Developer. We will consider applicants with a range of years of experience to build up the team.
  • Solid analytical skills and creative thinking used to make data-driven decisions
  • In-depth knowledge of photonic devices, RF Design and semiconductor physics.
  • Ability to connect design, technical and manufacturing requirements -and- relate to commercial success.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of software for photonic simulation, physics simulation, RF simulation -and- mask layout and EDA.
  • Strong communicator, self-confident and able to connect with people, able to win their trust and respect.
  • Innovative and flexible; realizes that a one-size-fits-all approach will not always solve the problem at hand
  • Experience in one or more of III-V, SiPh or SiN/SiO2 photonic technologies will be considered.
  • Experience with epitaxial growth and epi design for lasers, amplifiers and detectors -as well as- active-passive integration is an advantage.
